Objective: Propose a solution for coastal communities/neighborhoods at risk from projected rising sea levels.
Site: Mission Bay, San Francisco, CA
Process: First identify at risk areas through GIS modeling, then propose an architectural and urban solution.
Solution: At an urban scale, certain lots at greatest risk are to be slated for a transfer of development rights at specific intervals over the course of the next century in order to encourage development while also planning for the protection of the future wetlands. The architecture on the medium risk lots accommodates for partial deconstruction and repurposing of the lower floors to allow for water encroachment while keeping the majority of the building fit for occupancy.
